Roman and Stella

Four-year-old Roman and his almost three-year-old sister, Stella, have both been diagnosed with a very rare, progressive and fatal genetic disease called Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency (ASMD), also referred to as Niemann-Pick Disease. Roman regressed from the happy, playful boy who was so full of life, who loved to turn pages of books, laugh at silly words, blow kisses, mimic words and sounds, and play with his toys to a toddler who can now no longer sit up on his own and barely lift his arm to reach for a toy.

Roman loves being in the water and adores his books.  He is currently receiving an enzyme replacement therapy, as is his sister, and this requires bi-weekly infusions at Cincinnati Children’s.

Both children are now wheelchair bound and they love to be outdoors.  However, as they grow, it is getting more difficult to get them outside to the backyard.

Building Blocks for Kids received a generous donation of a wheelchair lift that will give the children easy access out their backdoor.  However, installing the lift will require a concrete pad and sidewalk to give them any accessibility from it.
